Lasith Malinga Clues at Retirement After ICC World T20

Dhaka, 26th Feb: Sri Lanka’s Twenty20 Captain, Lasith Malinga, has hinted that he might retire from his international career after playing the ICC World Twnety20 Cup 2016 in India. He declares that he is not fully fit. He performed in the match as four for 26 helped Sri Lanka beat the UAE by 14 runs.

After winning the match over UAE on 25th Feb he spoke at media conference. When Malinga was asked if he would like to quit after the finishing this World T20, just like Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara did after winning their last matches, he replied: “Might be”.

Malinga said that this has been a difficult comeback for him given that he had not played a game since November last year, because of a knee injury that was similar to the one he suffered in 2008 that reserved him out of cricket for about one year. Lankan Bowler elaborated that his current knee injury is so bad that complete healing might take close to two years that effectively ends his career now that he is about 33.

“I have played 12 years for the national team. I am now 32 and will soon be 33. I have had a bad injury and if at this stage I have to take one or one and half years of rest, I would rather have to finish my career,” said the Sri Lankan pacer. If I need to play tough cricket for my country, I don’t think I can then totally recover from the injury. That’s why I am saying I don’t know how many months or years are left in me. Whatever little I play, I want to serve the national team and my IPL team (Mumbai Indians) well.”
